People say the Nicest Things!
Since we first opened our virtual classroom doors in 2005, we've worked very hard to provide superb Classical education. Through the years, the responses from our students and parents have been very positive. Here are just a few of the glowing reports we've received.
"I too want to echo you in a big thanks to Dr. Fisher for being absolutely amazing. Somehow she manages to get an online class to be fun, engaging, and memorable. I feel like I legitimately know many of ya'll IRL. Dr. Fisher, that is incredibly impressive. Not only have you taught me much about literature, but also about life in general. Thanks so much for the impact you've had on my life!" 2024 Muse student
"Yesterday W. and I reviewed his plans for the school year ahead. As we talked over various options he told me, "I'm so tired of being around kids who just talk about video games and YouTube. I wish my whole life could be like a Lukeion class." --A Lukeion mom
"Last session concluded my time with you as a student. This year has been a blast, and I am incredibly grateful I got to experience Roman literature with you and my peers. All of you at the Lukeion Project have made some of my favourite classes of all time, simply because of the passion and way you teach. I can't put into words how much I'll miss you and the Muse series, but I hope you find this letter dear nonetheless. Thank you for all the hard work you do for us, and I hope to see you again soon :)" -- 2024 Muse Student
"...I just want to say that this is one of the most engaging classes I've ever taken, with an amazing group of classmates to boot! I want to thank all of you, especially Dr. Fisher, for being part of it. It means a ton to me!" -- 2024 Muse Student
"Dear Dr. Fisher, We're verily grateful for your support of Ava's Latin studies through her middle school years. She achieved fantastic results, two golds in NLE, and advanced Latin track placement in her new high-school. As she transitions to the new school, we'll carry a deep appreciation for you and the Lukeion program, and continue to celebrate the great achievements of your students in keeping lit the torch of timeless and beautiful classical languages." - 2024 Lukeion Family
"Thanks so much for the great class. Rosa really enjoyed it! We loved listening to her speeches and reading her papers. She learned so much. What a great process!" - 2024 Rhetoric Student
"I wanted to drop you a quick note of appreciation for all you have done for me this school year. My AP Latin test went quite a bit better than I expected—the circumstances were ideal as I was the only one taking this afternoon’s APs! Apparently, I was also the first homeschooler to take an AP exam in Roswell, NM! I I felt so equipped to answer the free response questions because of your thoroughness in covering the College Board syllabus. Your insistence on us giving as many Latin examples as possible in essays also proved extremely helpful and I just barely squeezed a fourteenth body paragraph in! Whether or not I earned a five, I loved learning from you this year and I am excited to continue the next two years!" -- 2024 AP Latin Student
"Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me in the last six years. You taught me a lot of Latin, which I’m very grateful for, but even more importantly, you taught me study skills and instilled a stronger sense of intellectual honesty and integrity in me than I previously possessed. I’m a much better person for having taken classes with you.
I’ve been accepted to Haverford College, my dream school. The first thing they tell you on the tour and in all the marketing material is an explanation of the school honor code, which is written by students, rigorously enforced both institutionally by the school itself and socially by the student body, and apparently one of the most restrictive and rigorous such documents in the country. Thank you for preparing me for that experience and for turning me into the kind of person for whom that’s a major selling point, and thank you for turning me into the kind of student that can keep up with coursework at the level that I want to be able to do.
Beyond that, I learned from you that I enjoy Latin a lot, and more generally doing things that don’t come easily to me. I’ve started seeking out challenges in other areas of my life much more than I used to, sticking with challenging or uncomfortable things more than I once would have, and enjoying things that I would once have dismissed as too difficult.
I’m going to be majoring in classics in college, and I’ve already started looking at the course catalog and reading syllabi to see what classes I want to take. Thank you so much for introducing me to Latin. I can’t emphasize enough how much I enjoyed the classes I took with you, both because of the subject matter and because of the way you taught them—your classes were among the only ones where I felt really challenged at every turn, but also knew that the outcomes were going to be both fair and worthwhile. I learned a lot from you—the actual subject that I was there to learn, but also what good teaching looks like, what kind of career I might want to have in the future, how to learn effectively, and how to be a better person. You were probably the most impactful teacher I ever had. Thank you so much for everything you’ve done for me." -- 2024 Latin 5 graduate
"I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the profound impact you have had on S.'s academic journey over the past two years. Your courses have not only solidified her passion for studying the classics but also provided her with a strong foundation for her future endeavors in this field. Your unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in helping S. thrive, despite the challenges posed by her dyslexia. The way you have tailored your teaching approach to accommodate her learning needs is truly commendable and has made a world of difference in her educational experience.
Moreover, I am incredibly grateful for your willingness to write recommendations for S. As a homeschool student, securing meaningful references that accurately represent her academic abilities can be a daunting task. Your unique insight into her performance and growth over the past two years is invaluable and will undoubtedly strengthen her applications.
Once again, I cannot thank you enough for your dedication to teaching such engaging and challenging coursework and for nurturing S.'s love for the classics. Your influence has been truly transformative, and we are forever grateful for the role you have played in shaping her academic path." --Mom of 2024 Muse Series student
"...Taking Latin with you these past four years has been an incredible blessing. Living in the Philippines, I never expected to be able to take a classical language class. Lukeion gave me the opportunity to do that, and probably a better Latin education than many of my friends in the US get at their schools.
I recently finished translating a work written by Martin Luther in Latin, for a friend of my dad's working on his PhD. Even though it wasn't Golden Age Latin like we practice at Lukeion, I felt so capable and had all the tools I needed to figure it out. And my parents are always amazed at the Roman history knowledge of me and my sister! Even practicing essays for the AP Latin exam has improved my writing skills. In short, Lukeion has taught me so much in so many different areas.
I'm eager to continue using my knowledge of Latin as I head into college. I'll be studying secondary education...so maybe one day I'll be teaching Latin to high schoolers like you do! (I'm hoping to learn some Greek and Hebrew as well, since my love for languages has only grown as I've studied Latin.) I couldn't imagine a better Latin course or teacher than you and Lukeion. Thank you so much." -- 2024 AP Latin student at The Lukeion Project
"This is A. K., I took Ancient Greek with you a few years ago when I was in high school. Last time I emailed you was in 2021, when I was in Greece participating in a survey in Boiotia in the Kopaic Basin. That was my first time doing fieldwork in the region. Since then, I have graduated from University of Maryland, Baltimore County with my bachelors with a double major in Biology and Ancient Studies, attended a summer program in Bioarchaeology at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, and returned to Boiotia for a vegetation survey in the summer of 2022, all in the span of a month!
Today I am emailing you to let you know that I am currently in the process of writing my dissertation as a Masters student at the University of York in the UK. I am pursuing my MSc in Bioarchaeology and my dissertation is on improving ancient DNA extraction in archaeological samples. I have fully committed to archaeology and have worked in CRM in the US in addition to my summer work in Greece. I have had the opportunity through my mentors in Maryland and my studies in the UK to conduct a faunal analysis and present that research at a conference, learn GIS and archaeological data management, and enroll in an extracurricular class in Modern Greek to work on my conversational skills.
While I have strayed from my Ancient Greek studies into bioarchaeology in the last year, it is truly the core of why I pursued archaeology. I am of the mind that I had not had the opportunity to take Ancient Greek and Greek History with you in my high school years that I would not have taken the classes in Greek archaeology, the Greek Bronze Age, and the Ancient Greek language in my undergrad that ultimately led me to pursue archaeology as a career. And I am so happy that I did- even if archaeological fieldwork is coated with prickly plants worldwide.
I am unsure what my future will look like at the moment. But this summer I am returning once again, for the third time, to Boiotia to excavate a Late Bronze Age site near Gla two years after my first survey. By January I hope to have received my Master’s degree in Bioarchaeology. After that, I’m not sure where I will end up. I hope to return to Ancient Greece in my research as it is still so very dear to me. But even if I do not and I find myself on another path, I would have not discovered the career I love without it and without my classes with the Lukeion Project. Though, I would still like to learn Linear B, for the bragging rights. It can't be that hard after translating Euripides, right?" -- Lukeion graduate
"I just received my ACT score back and I got 36's in both English and Reading! I know this is due to all the practice in analyzing we have been doing. I also majorly benefited from all the timed work I have done in the last three years. I actually ended up with five extra minutes in the English section. Another side note-my literature teacher complimented me on my ability to analyze texts and she said she knew it was from my Latin studies because it was something my classmates are not doing. AP Latin is paying off huge!" - 2023 AP Latin Student
"You continue to be a bright spot in our lives! *M* absolutely LOVES your classes. You make learning these fundamentals (with widespread relevance and application across all domains) a delight. And your recent post on the value of studying philosophy is so resonant with us. We look forward to many more years of *M* (and then his younger brother, *F*) learning with you."
"Magistra Barr, *A* took her final exam today and to say I am proud of her would be an understatement. She's been studying daily and taking your words about studying before bed and reviewing a bit in the morning to heart, especially since getting a 93 and 91 on the past two quizzes after a string of 98+ quizzes. After hitting submit and seeing her score, she was so excited. She called her dad to let him know and he let her pick out where we were going for lunch. She picked a local pizza place where they know us well and several of the waitresses asked about her classes. She excitedly shared the results of her final with them and one of them said - "I guess all your hard work paid off then! Good job!"
That remark caught my attention because it seems to capture the attitude of our culture regarding education. I know that she was trying to be encouraging to my daughter and I appreciate that greatly, but when I think about how this class is paying off I don't think about that score. Instead, I think about the discipline and diligence in learning strong study habits and communication skills with her teacher. I think about the lessons she is learning from going over her homework and quizzes afterward to understand why she missed what she did. I think of the wonderful conversations we've had about some of the S.A. translation homework she's done - conversations that speak to our values and character. I think about all the times she's recognized cognates "in real life" from her Latin vocab. The reward in this class is far greater than the grade she earned today on her final. And though she might not see it yet, I have seen the foreshadowing of it in these days for her future. I am so very pleased that we chose to take this class through Lukeion. I know I've said it before, but it bears repeating, that this class is of a much superior quality than any language class I've ever taken both in high school and at the collegiate level. Thank you so much for all your hard work, organization, and wonderful teaching skills. It has been an absolute pleasure. Warmest regards"
"Lukeion classes are the single best thing we’ve had our kids do in their education. From workshops to semester classes, they take your student step by step through the material, teaching excellent study skills and sharing a passionate love for learning. Kids can start in middle school and they will thrive with Lukeion’s excellent instructors! Our older sons who have gone to college, master’s programs, and law school have all said it’s what they learned in Lukeion that has made a lasting difference, and that many of their classmates arrived at college unprepared. {Regarding a free summer workshop]. My daughter heading to college would be in the workshop except that right now, she’s flying to Italy. Why? Because she and her sister want to go see every place they learned about with The Lukeion Project.... Lukeion rocks!!!" -a happy Lukeion mom
"I just want to express my gratitude as a parent, "A" has a lot of fun and joy in your Witty Wordsmith class, and she has also learned a lot from the class. She finds your class engaging, fun and interesting, it’s one of the classes she really looks forward to. She felt that you are an engaging teacher that has lots of humor! Thank you for all you do and my two other children "C" and "E" are also enjoying and benefiting from the curriculum of Lukeion Project.
The Latin classes in Lukeion Project are of a higher standard compares to many other places we have had experiences with. The Counting to Computers (math/social science) class "C" takes this year is very unique, as she expressed to me, and "C" is enjoying it and hope Lukeion has more classes like that, besides the excellent and reputable classical languages and literature classes that so many students have benefited from. "E" has gained much from taking the Latin classes in Lukeion, and although literature is not his strength, he has improved his knowledge and gain solid skills since he joins Lukeion Project." -- Autumn 2021 parent
"B. is super excited about starting 9th grade and doing higher-level Lukeion classes like her brothers did. ...Just in case you keep a digital trophy wall, L. started Lenoir-Rhyne University as a sophomore with a full tuition scholarship, is going to Canterbury next semester, gets his masters in education in 2022-23, and is looking at history doctoral programs. M. is going to Macalester College next fall for environmental pre-law with full tuition scholarship and is already talking to the study abroad office about going to New Zealand. Both of them have said so.many.times that the Witty Wordsmith/ Barbarian Diagrammarian classes were the most useful, most applicable, most discipline-spanning classes they ever took, and Logan wants to teach history in large part because of the Lukeion influence. So thank you.) " - Long time Lukeion family (4/21)
"Thank you both for being truly wonderful teachers! It would not be our general inclination to lean so heavily on an online school, but we have been completely won over by your classes. We are delighted by every thoughtful pedagogical detail: your excellent lectures, meticulous classroom management, high standards in general protocol and academic rigor, and personal attention to our children. It is always difficult to choose from the amazing selection offered in the course catalog. After this year's deliberations, Garret joked that we moved to Moscow, Idaho, with all of its outstanding education opportunities...to continue as faithful students of the Barrs! With our deep regards and fond appreciation," - 2021
"We are very excited for Luke to take Latin with Lukeion as we consider Lukeion the "gold standard" of Latin instruction!" - 2021
"We have been so pleased with the courses we have taken at Lukeion. My children have loved Mr. Barrs witty humor and I love the thorough syllabus in Latin." - 2021
"Thank you for offering so many wonderful educational opportunities! Gabriel is excited to continue learning with The Lukeion Project." - 2021
"Kathlyn has enjoyed all of your classes. Thank you for being such as inspiration to her and instilling a love for the classics in her. She just has two more years with Lukeion and she's off to college. We are not sure where she will be attending but I hope that she will reach out to y'all for guidance. She is planning on majoring in classics. Btw, her favorite subject is Greek!" - 2021
"We are using a number of different online course providers and Lukeion has been consistently better organized. The content is marvellous, too!" - 2021
"Thanks for all you do! Lukeion has been a blessing to our family in many ways! We enjoy teaching and (for the most part) can cover the bases. But, we can't teach ancient languages! Thank you for the high bar and firm expectations you provide. It's exactly what our boys need!" - 2021
"P. LOVES Lukeion Latin. It has been challenging but also incredibly rewarding for her. Such a worthwhile investment - we're thankful for the Latin experience she is having!" - 2021
"Met you at GHC a few years ago. Best spur of the moment decision we ever made! :slightly_smiling_face: Lukeion is a blessing to us! Thank you." - 2021
"B. really enjoys learning Latin! Our only regret is that we didn't start sooner!" - 2021
"My son has taken Lukeion classes the last two years and all of them have been exceptional. He will unfortunately be attending an in-person high school next year and will not be able to take any semester long classes. I wish my son and older daughter were able to continue taking Lukeion classes during their high school years. Thank you for offering such good quality classes for home schoolers!" - 2021
"I am so impressed with your program. My daughter has enjoyed her first year with you. We look forward to another great year. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication to excellence!" - 2021
"We have so appreciated Lukeion this year, and are excited for A. and L. to continue it next year. Because of our time zone, and the early bedtime/early rising that their regular schooling requires here, we want to make sure that we can continue to operate as we have this year: that is, with the girls watching the lessons by recording during the week, but submitting their requirements on time with the rest of the class. Thank you for your service to our family!" - 2021
"Thank you Dr Barr. My children enjoy the classes at Lukeion and I just to say thank you for the curriculum and the instructions. Wonderful team!" - 2021
"My daughter cannot say enough good things about your Latin class. Thank you!" - 2021
"Mrs. Barr is wonderful and we can honestly say she's the best Latin teacher our family has had and no one paid me to say this :)" - 2021
"I also wanted to tell you that S. is absolutely loving the Muse classes. As it turns out, Greek comedy is the stuff 14 year old boy dreams are made of. Who knew?" - 2021
"We love everything about Lukeion, and are so grateful for your hard work. We appreciate the way you conduct online classes--with helpful slides and prepared lectures, rather than live-streaming yourselves drinking coffee over so-called Socratic discussions. The kids really enjoy your classes and often quote you over dinner so the whole family can appreciate your sense of humour. I could say much more, and often do when I am telling others about your school. Thank you both for all that you do!" -- a 2021 Lukeion Family

"We saw Isabelle's grades come through, so this is just a note to say Thank You for your passion for Latin and all things Classical. Your challenging and engaging classes are a perfect match for our daughter, and we love to see her rise to the occasion. She works hard because she respects you; she loved the class. " Mom of Latin 1 student, 2020
"I am so appreciative of the excellent classes you teach and grateful that J. had the opportunity to take them. He really enjoyed the class and many times ran into the room telling me he has to read me this or that section of his reading because he was so amused or intrigued." -- 2020 Muse Student
"I want to thank you and Amy for the fantastic classical education you gave S. before he entered boarding school. He was unfortunately not able to study Greek at Deerfield this past year because of scheduling limitations, but he had great success in Latin on account of his two years of Lukeion preparation. In fact he was so well prepared that his teacher offered at the beginning of the year to allow him to skip straight to Latin IV. He decided to stay in Latin III and ended up with a 100 average for the year and a perfect score on the NLE. This summer he will be participating in the advanced Latin program at the CUNY Latin/Greek Institute. Thank you both very much for allowing him to have all of this wonderful success."
[Regarding the Muse Series] "I'm really looking forward to the reunion next week. Your class was the first rigorous one I ever took, and I remember definitely struggling. Your class and the way you taught it is still absolutely the standard I have held all of my classes to through high school, and it led me to take some fantastic courses. I still do miss your classes, though. I always fantasized about coming back to take them again, and especially getting a second chance to write those essays. I recently went back to reread them, and was definitely cringing the whole time through. Thank you for being so patient with them :-) " - Former Muse student regarding the grandly successful online Muse / Marcus Aurelius reunion, 2020
"Dear Dr. Fisher,
I am so happy that you enjoyed the draft; here is the complete and genuine article.
Thank you so much for teaching me Latin! I really enjoyed having you as a teacher, not only for this class but also for the past year. I truly appreciated your detailed feedback on assignments. You fostered a class environment that welcomed discussion (even complaining about Horace and his ridiculous notion that Greek meter can function in Latin). I do not think I have ever had a teacher so fascinated by poetic idiosyncrasies, and so indulgent to her students as to pursue rabbit holes on Catullus..." - Latin 3 student, 2020
"I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for your instruction the past four years, for our daughter K. Q.. She has started her freshman year at one of our state universities, with plans to pursue an undergraduate in Biology, then continue to the UW Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. It has only been two months into college and I can't tell you how many times she's commented that writing rhetorical essays, analytical commentaries on journal articles, and simply finding good study habits, have been "easy" for her, as a result of her Latin experience through Lukeion. Not that her work hasn't been challenging, but she knows the tools to use in executing the assignments thoughtfully and thoroughly. What a great feeling to go into post high school education and have the confidence to tackle college work. A good handful of her classmates are feeling frustrated--not that they won't do well, or succeed, but it has been so nice to be very well prepped for this experience. To add to her undergraduate experience, she pursued a part time job in a veterinary clinic, to be immersed in the setting, before applying to vet school. Not only has she been able to write doctor's orders with ease, but also understand them, as so much of those terms are Latin based (well, everything is, right? :)) and she understands the root meaning of them. We knew we made a good choice to pursue Lukeion, but thought you might want to hear about past students and how it has definitely made a difference. " ~P. Q. (Lukeion parent)
"Dear My Barr, I just wanted to send you a little note regarding my current situation in Greek. I am now nearby two thirds of the way through the semester, and we have already read Homer, Theocritus, and Lucian, and I am right now reading Callimachus. This has been a really enjoyable semester in Greek, and I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am that we found the Lukeion Project all those years ago and I was able to start taking Greek from you so early! I know that I would be nowhere near where I am now if it were not for all of the amazing teaching I have received over the last six years with you (all the way back in Barbarian Diagramarian and early workshops on Greek culture six years ago!). It was also so nice to finally meet you face-to-face last summer in Greece. I feel that taking Greek and other classes at the Lukeion Project with you and other teachers has really made my the student that I am, and I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am that you were such an instrumental part of that growth for me. Thank you again for all of your wonderful teaching." --G.N.
"Hi Dr. Fisher! I wanted to get back in touch with you since its been a while and let you know how things are going at Duke (and find out how things are at the Lukeion Project)! I hope everything is going well with your students! I definitely miss being in Latin--sadly I don't have room in my schedule here to keep taking it but I will say that my knowledge of the language has proven so helpful in the majority of my classes already. I am taking an Ancient Greek history course this semester, since I've decided to minor in Classical Studies, and the readings we are doing are reminding me so much of taking Muse with you. We just finished Herodotus and are moving on to Thucydides, which I am not that excited about (I don't know if you remember, but our class was not a fan of him) but I do think that sophomore in college me is a bit better equipped to appreciate him than 8th grade me . My professor in the class, Joshua Sosin, is fantastic--he reminds me of you in that he's a fantastic lecturer--and he thought it was very cool when I told him about all of the classics courses I had taken with Lukeion. He's now trying to persuade me to start up with Greek again, which unfortunately I can't do but I don't think he gets many people in this class who have already taken Greek before. I am so grateful every day for my experiences with Lukeion because I truly believe that my college experience has already been so much richer and more amazing having taken the courses with y'all that I did." --K.
"Your classes are insightful, well-crafted, well-taught and very engaging. Our son, W., thoroughly enjoyed Witty Wordsmith and Barbarian Diagrammarian; our daughter loves your Greek and Roman courses." D.G., Lukeion parent
"I just wanted to write and tell you how much I appreciate the work you do. In his 12 years on this planet, you are the first teacher E. has had who challenges him at the level he requires. It's a joy to see him learning and growing--particularly in the area of time management skills! You've accomplished miracles on that front. You really go the extra mile with your students. It shows and I'm grateful." -Lukeion parent
"S. was telling me today that the A in Ethics (PHIL 200) is thanks to you. The professor used S.’s paper as an example of how to write well. He praised the lack of subordinate clauses and basically everything you trained out of your students. He particularly praised S. for writing simply and clearly. So from my family, thank you very much." -long time Lukeion family
Check out this article by one of our former students and how Classical studies changed the course of her life.
"Thank you all for teaching. It is my theory that while homeschooling, you should only let people who love their subject teach your child - even if they never love the subject, the interest and excitement are communicated in every aspect of teaching. You all certainly qualify as loving what you teach."-Lukeion parent
"Loving it all. Well done on your excellent methodology and skilful teaching. Definitely a mastery-based approach!" -Lukeion parent
"Χαίρε Dr. Barr, This is a pretty belated email, but I wanted to let you know I attended NJCL Convention again this summer and got First Place in the country on the Greek Grammar test. I wanted to thank you for all the instruction you provided - without it I would not have been able to score as well as I did. I also wanted to let you know I'm attending the University of Mary Washington starting this fall, planning to double major in Latin and Greek. Thank you for the tutelage you provided me in studying Greek and for the first-hand experience in translating you gave the class at the end of the year. Σοι χαρὶν ἀποδίδωμι," --M.N., Lukeion student
"We appreciate not only the academic rigor, but also the classroom management and structure of your classes. Based on our family's experience, The Lukeion Project is the best, by far, online provider for quality high school courses. We're looking forward to more Classical study in the future. Thank you!" -Lukeion parent
"I am writing to let Dr. Amy Barr and Dr. Sue Fisher know that the latin classes that I took from them for three years more than prepared me for college-level Latin courses. I just finished Latin 200 at Christopher Newport University, and the entire content of the course was prior knowledge to me, allowing me to complete it quite comfortably. Even though my academic major is in Computer Engineering, I am fortunate to be studying at a liberal arts school where I can still study Latin. It's a very useful course of study, I find, and I'd like to thank you both not only for teaching me facility with the basics of translating the language, but showing me just how enjoyable it can be. I also think that it speaks to your teaching ability that I was able to pick the language back up so quickly after more than a year-long break in study. The Lukeion Project really deserves some praise for making Latin accessible to students all over the world, especially to homeschoolers like me who might not otherwise have any opportunity to learn the language from professionals." H.W., now college student
"I cannot thank you enough for everything that you have offered our homeschool through your courses to help make our daughter the thoughtful and creative thinker she has become. I wanted her to have the freedom to pursue her interests instead of a rigid checklist for her education." Michelle C., parent.
“R. was not fond of Latin. I did try with her but not as hard as I should have. The Latin 1 class she is taking this year was my last attempt at getting her to learn it. I told her that I wanted her to take this class but she could quit after this year if she didn't like it. By the second class, she told me that Sue Fisher was her favorite teacher ever. By the third class, she told me that she wanted to take Latin II. I know she could be doing better in the class. She doesn't study like she ought, and she isn't a careful student. I cannot tell you how many times she has finished a test (way too quickly) and then said, "I thought I clicked that!" But for all that, she is enjoying it and learning much more than she would have from me. She tells her younger brothers how worthwhile studying Latin is if they fuss about their work. She sits down her 7-year-old sister and gives her Latin lessons. I'm surprised she hasn't started working on the toddler. So, thank you for this class. I appreciate the high standards and friendly encouragement. I would not hesitate to recommend Lukeion to others." -Tracy”
From a former Latin 2 student: "A few days ago, during freshman orientation at Michigan, I took the Latin placement --- and tested out of four semesters! (I'd prepared by translating some of the Loci Immutati: Socrates' views on death, etc.) The proctor even said my Ovid translation was pretty good --- I'd been worried because all his adjectives had been miles away from their nouns. ... By the way, I also took the Spanish placement, just for kicks; I'd spent the day before orientation learning Spanish grammar, fascinated --- and you won't believe it, but I tested out of two semesters! The practice I got in Latin 1 and 2 learning and analyzing forms truly helped me absorb Spanish. Well, four semesters means I've satisfied the foreign language requirement, and have 16 credits to spend on other interesting classes!" ~Samuel T., Lukeion Student
Latin 1 has been challenging for [my son]. It has also been very good for him. Sue Fisher is a terrific instructor. She has a great sense of humor ,is very kind ,and quick to respond to questions. Thank You for helping my son grow. ~Wallace, parent
[My daughter] loves Latin, and that is due to her having a great class with a fantastic teacher. Amy has really taught [her] so much. I can't believe [she] is entering her final year of high school. It seems like yesterday that I emailed Amy when [she] was in a Henle class and hating it in 8th grade. Time flies. But anyway, I am so happy she has had the opportunity to be part of your classes!
~Anita, parent
This past year, Z. took an online course offered by another well respected online academy and even though he found the topic interesting, he believes your classes are more challenging and interesting. Thank you for that.
~Charlotte W., parent
I love my Greek class.
~Belle T., student
B. and S. tell me that their Lukeion classes are the best classes (online or IRL) that they have ever taken. They truly appreciate that you give them a syllabus with dates attached and then stick to the syllabus. They appreciate that everyone does their homework. More importantly, they love being held to high standards (go figure)

We absolutely love Lukeion. M. will actually be enrolled in a part time classical academy next year, but we are still signing up for Lukeion because the teaching is superior to anything else we've used.
~Katherine S., parent
D. loves your class and wanted to be sure I registered him for Greek 3 next year ;)! Thank you!
~Julia K., parent
You have created a wonderful program. Thanks!
~Louise B., parent
I could not be more impressed with your classes. My son was begging to quit Latin when we switched from another online class to Lukeion. Now he is pestering me to do earlybird registration for AP Latin 4. Thank you!
~Heather Q., parent
My daughter enjoys your classes immensely. We are so happy to have found our school. Thank you!
~Megan E., parent
Thanks to Lukeion for giving M. the opportunity to excel at his studies!
~Jessica M., parent
You have helped me develop a love for mythology, the English and Latin languages and have taught me how to write essay questions and research papers. Thank you!
~Madeline N., student
S. has loved and excelled the last two years. He's looking forward to taking his Latin to the next level.
~Darcy H., parent
We love Lukeion! Our son Q. took Latin I last year and is now excelling in high school in his Latin II class. This year P. is taking Latin I. Our daughter is completing Latin II in high school and has chosen to switch to Lukeion for Latin III. Thank you for creating such clear and thorough programs, both in languages and history.
~Alison B., parent
This is G.'s 3rd year with Lukeion. You offer outstanding instruction! We look forward to adding M. to the Lukeion family.
~Jennifer R., parent
Looking forward to another challenging but fruitful year of Latin!
~Amy H., adult student
Love your work! I'm thrilled S. has this wonderful opportunity to work with the Lukeion teachers. She's had Latin for Children A-C, but this past year we took a break for informal logic. She's very concerned about taking this advanced class and keeping up. I've assured her she is ready for it.
~Micki C., parent
Thank you for providing an excellent option for homeschooling families!
~Vera H., parent
Happy campers through and through. Thank you for all you do!
~Cassie N., parent
Thank you for unburdening my homeschool curriculum! We look forward to another great year.
~Andrea K., parent
J. is a great fan, she tells everyone to take Latin with Lukeion! We appreciate the quality of your school.
~Andreanna M., parent
"After two weeks of college classes, I can say with confidence that your class prepared me better than any of my other classes for college workloads and thinking styles. When your AP kids complain about the amount of writing that they have to do, tell the young whippersnappers about their predecessor who is enjoying her college classes much more than her peers because of it."
~Amanda R., Lukeion veteran
I'm applying to Cambridge University in England to major in Classics there, and I'm hoping to submit one of the essays I wrote for your [AP Latin] class as a writing sample! ...Cambridge will be $40,000 cheaper than it could be, since I have the AP Latin qualification [from your course]. I would get to go through a three-year course instead of a four-year course, skipping the introductory year!
~E.H., student
I'm the parent of a child in your Latin IA class .... I have to write and say thank you because [my son] is enjoying the class so much. When he pushed away from the computer after the first class, he said, "Wow, that was really FUN." As if he'd just opened a bottle of medicine and found a Skittle. [My son] has hyperlexia with audio processing issues. He has great difficulty listening to things like podcasts, audiobooks, and for a long while as a little kid he watched movies with the subtitles turned on -- in English. I didn't think it would be possible for him to succeed in a class where there was a live audio component, but friends... encouraged me to try Lukeion. I'm so glad I did! The visuals you display -- words and pictures -- really help him. And he is loving the class. THANK YOU! You are doing a great job.
~Lydia N.
[my son] has already informed me that after he finishes his four years of Latin he intends to take Greek. He had a look of horror when I asked him what he was going to do if he goes back to a brick and mortar high school in a couple of years. He told me we would need to find a way to keep Lukeion!!
~ Liz A.
"I've been meaning to write ... to let you know that [my daughter], as an 8th grader, took the ACT and scored in the 99% for her verbal component. This is directly attributable to her having participated in Amy's rigorous Latin class and Regan's Barbarian Diagrammarian. I so appreciate your wonderful courses and the academic challenge that you offer in such a very humorous but educational format. The cost for your course, when weighed against the scholarship offers that have flooded in since her results, is more than compensated. The return on investment is astronomical."
~Lynn L.
"I just really love how the Barrs have helped open my son's eyes and mind to the beauty of the ancient world and have inspired him to want to learn more on his own. " Read more from this great blog post.
~Charlotte, parent
"When I first contacted Lukeion several years ago, I had hoped to take a class and eventually get my son, who is now 12, into a class or two of yours. .... I wanted you to know that your "Dust-free Antiquity" TM (!) approach to ancient history has set for us a high standard of expectation for the teachers at Daniel's school. Most of them live up to it, but sadly his teacher for ancient history this year seems a little sleepy on the job. Your newsletter links and exciting course descriptions are a real help to reminding [my son] that it doesn't have to be "borh--rhing"! I'll be watching your catalog for workshops and mini-classes that might fit in to the schedule, esp. in the summer."
~Diane, parent
"I was writing to let you know how impressed I have been with the quality of the Latin 3A course. I had been given only glowing reports of Lukeion through friends who were Davidson Young Scholars like [my son] but I was still bowled over by the standards you set...and the children worked to reach."
~Mary Beth, parent
"My daughter has taken several workshops. She was thrilled and each class fed her intellectual curiosity in a wonderful way. My daughter is not easily thrilled, so that is a huge compliment! She was engaged by the subject matter, and the Barrs' enthusiasm definitely contagious. I highly recommend their classes! If you're a parent without a lot of inclination toward history, let the Barrs teach your kids!" Elizabeth, parent
"I keep thinking that I need to email you and Mrs. Barr to tell you how pleased we are with your classes. I appreciate so much your expertise, your enthusiasm and your standards (both expressed and enforced). I actually do a little "I love the Barrs" song and dance whenever I walk by and hear you or Mrs. Barr holding a student to the standard that was clearly laid out in the beginning. Besides maybe their music lessons, this is the first class where I finally feel like we're getting our money's worth and I don't have to come behind the teacher to supplement or teach, etc... It's obvious you're spending a lot of time preparing for these classes and really want your students to succeed. I believe the best teachers inspire their students and you both have done that for [my son] I know by things he says that part of him wanting to do well it to please you. He respects you both very much." ~Diane, parent
"I have to tell you, I am so very pleased with [ my son's] progress in Latin. I have long known that there is a distinct difference in his performance when he is working for either of the Barrs. He has great respect for both of you. When he is working for me, that desire to please just isn’t as strong I have not always been a strong proponent of grammar as busy-work when my kids were younger, so I enrolled him in a live online English 3 class this year, through [another online program], so that he might have some concurrent refresher work in English grammar during this Latin course. Ironically, he is learning more about English grammar from the Latin course than he is from the Eng. 3. He is experiencing grief trying to complete the grammar work for that course, and I (a long-time ago English major) am also having trouble figuring out how to help him in that class!! Funny how things work out. Thank you for all you do in making the class(es) interesting and appealing. Thank you for earning his respect and for instilling in him a desire to succeed and do his very best. I am so thankful we found Lukeion !!" ~Labeth, parent
Every time someone asks me about home schooling a high schooler, I tell them about your program. Hopefully some of them have found their way to you. I also post your schedules on my Facebook page. I sincerely hope your program is around for a long time! You do great work.
~Rexanne, parent
“We want to thank you for giving (our daughter) such a wonderful ‘Latin foundation!!!’ She learned so much from you and I would highly recommend your program!”
Denise B., parent
"I tell (my kids) each week how blessed they are to have you BOTH teach this caliber of class – where we know the information is correct and coming from people who have been there and laid hands on this stuff! WE are so fortunate!" ~Cathy, parent
"We are not new to the Project but have thoroughly enjoyed our two year experience with you. We tell many people about your teaching. We will be with you for many years since the youngest guy here is only 10 and wanted to start Latin with you in the fall. We will try to fit in a few history workshops in the summer and the fall. Thanks for your great teaching and commitment to excellence!!”
~Debbie, parent of several Lukeion Project students
"My sons have taken many Lukeion workshops, and we have never been disappointed- the class on Destroyed Cities was no exception! The content of Destroyed Cities is thorough, and Amy was a wonderful instructor- easy to listen to, and very engaging. After classes, my sons discussed what they had learned with the rest of the family. Amy's infectious enthusiasm filtered from my boys to their siblings, and suddenly we had a real home school moment...you know, the one where a small idea becomes a larger one. Suddenly, volcanic activity was the topic of the week, and my younger children were building volcanoes with the garden hose in our sandbox. Although Lukeion classes are for my teens, the great educational info from class has an impact on all in our family. Lukeion is a blessing to all of us!!!"
~Sarah, parent of several Lukeion Project students
"I really enjoyed Mrs. Barr's teaching. I had been working with a different Latin program but was unable to understand some of the points about the grammar, but Mrs. Barr helped me understand them very quickly. I was able to easily grasp all the topics she talked about."
~Tyler, student who ended up studying Latin with us for three years
"My kids loved the class so much that they gave their dad a full report at dinner and we also did some of our own research on people and places that you discussed. They now want to travel to Rome!!"
~mom of "Archaeology of Rome" workshop participants
"This was a very exiting workshop! Odysseus' journey by itself is an amazing story, and the instructor made it even more enjoyable by explaining it extremely well. Thank you for teaching!"
~Odyssey workshop student
"I just wanted to send you a quick note to let you know how wonderfully handy the workshop syllabi are. I print one for every workshop to put in our home school notebook. It's a great reference on the information covered. I'm sure they are a lot of work to set up and maintain, but these touches add so much and are very useful. (semester classes & class web sites are also OUTSTANDING). Truth is I print out several and also send a copy to my hubby in Iraq.. it helps him stay involved.. BTW- He loves to show them to the other guys and tell them about what wonderful educational opportunities homeschoolers have.. They ARE impressed! (smiles... Go Lukeion!)"
~ Rita, parent
"We love, love, love Lukeion- and are so thankful for Regan, Amy & their children who allow their parents to teach!!!" Anonymous
"I was especially impressed with how you handled the class. I personally know 5 of the participants, and while these young men are great, and very respectful, I also know that they have opinions! Of all of your classes, this class seemed to have the most feedback to deal with ...questions, comments, etc. You did a super job handling each stray comment, or difficult question. You gently corrected strongly held opinions (some from my own sons). You did all of this effortlessly and seemed like a conductor of an orchestra, handling opinions, questions and comments all while pushing through your material. I can only imagine how LOUD this class would have been if everyone were in person. You did a super job, and my 3 sons loved it!"
~Parent of a Greek Warfare participant
"You're doing a great job, and we really appreciate you offering this service to homeschoolers. As a mom of 7 (aged 15 through 2 months), I have very little time to spare. Although my husband and I love history, and would like to be able to teach it totally on our own, we have found this to be unrealistic in our home right now :-). Also, we have wanted our son to experience classes with other teachers, and especially to learn how to meet deadlines that are set by others. Lukeion classes have fit perfectly into our family life, and have met many needs for our home school."
~Sarah, home school mom
"Regan Barr not only offered his expertise on Ancient Greece, but enabled his students to develop skills in note-taking, test-taking, and public speaking. These skills will prepare high schoolers to succeed in college level courses. In addition, both Regan and Amy went above and beyond, taking a personal interest in each student. The comments on quizzes, tests and papers reflected a genuine desire for his students to grow in knowledge, with constructive comments helping students to expand their learning in a positive way. The time, energy, and personal interest in each student's growth were above and beyond any expectation of an instructor. It is quite obvious that Regan and Amy value this lifestyle of sharing their expertise and God-given teaching ability with interested learners. Thank you! We can't wait to return to the Lukeion Project for Ancient Rome!"
~from parent of Greek History student
"Keeping a 15 year old boy interested in schoolwork is often a challenge. Using warfare and weapons as a basis for teaching history works for us. The Lukeion's courses and workshops are filled with memorable visuals, great stories to help remember important parts and engaging activities to reinforce the material. Once into the subject, my son extrapolates with many questions which instill a desire to learn more, not to mention building his knowledge base. If I asked him if he wanted a course in Ancient Greek Warfare he would turn me down flat, but when Professor Barr asked if anyone was interested, my son could not type his affirmative answer fast enough. My son has enjoyed both Professor Barr’s teaching styles and will continue to take classes from them, willingly, next year." ~Mother of one of our spring warfare students
"Right before I had my first lesson from Mrs. Barr I prepared myself to be bored ... after all, I was about to learn Latin. I figured whoever was teaching this had to be some monotone; boring professor ... I was proven so wrong! Both of the Barrs are interesting and funny and go out of the way to make learning enjoyable. Any teenager with a willingness to learn would benefit from the Lukeion Project. And those who don't ... might just change their minds after a Lukeion Project class." ~Then Latin 1 student—now in college after three years of Lukeion Latin
"My child hasn't been this excited about learning in a very long time!"
~Elizabeth, parent
"I loved it! After each class I would tell my brothers and sister about the things I learned. The classes are very good, ...everything explained very well. I would take every class you had if I had enough time!" ~Greek Culture student, age 15
"These classes are great! Not only do you learn a huge amount of ancient history, but you get to see some wonderful pictures of archeological artifacts. The classes are very well presented. The technology is amazing-it is just like being in a real class room. I learned a lot of things over the four days, thank you for teaching!" ~Diane, one of our adult Troy workshop attendees
"I have been meaning to ... let you know what a fabulous time [my son] had in your classes this semester. He loved your lively, information packed presentations, the vivid snapshots of ancient history and art in your slides, and the interactive, enjoyable format of the readings and the homework. I was very pleased with the writing and presentation focus of the course and feel they definitely added an additional level of interaction and learning. He looks forward to more in the spring semester!"
~Jean, Parent of one of our Mythology students
"The Lukeion Project is a great resource for ministers. I attended the Crucifixion workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it. It provided new information surrounding the Passion Week and really stimulated a greater spiritual awareness of God’s love and his plan. Keep it going; I know it will bless many more ministers as word gets out." ~Forrest, Church Leader, Oklahoma City, OK
"I would definitely recommend this workshop (Alexander the Great) to a friend. It is great! Lots of details are explained very well and in a manner that is easy to understand."
~Anonymous participant
"This class (Athens) is great. I learned so much about Athens that I didn't know before. I especially liked how Regan described the buildings, their design and functions. Thank you for teaching!"
~Norris, age 15
"Thanks Lukeion for making the ancient world relevant to our world. My kids have loved their classes and are constantly noticing things in our culture now that are really descendants of the Greek and Roman roots. We had the privilege to tour Kennedy Space Center last week…. Not only did they know who Apollo was but Apollo XIII is marked with winged horses and a Latin inscription--each of which they were able to tell me about. Way to go. We will definitely be looking to sign up again."
~DeeDee, parent

~Sherene S., parent

"This class (Athens) is great. I learned so much about Athens that I didn't know before. I especially liked how Regan described the buildings, their design and functions. Thank you for teaching!"
