Barbarian Diagrammarian: Visual English for the Bold and Daring
Grammar, which knows how to control even kings."
--Moliere
You don't have to be a professor of English to know that there is an educational crisis in America: People don't know much about grammar anymore. After years of hearing a call for help from parents wishing to better equip students before they begin Greek or Latin, we've devised the perfect, robust, fun, and visual approach to prepare students for their own language as well as any other.
Excellence in language is in high demand. Here's how one parent described our course:
"I've been meaning to write since June to let you know that [my daughter], as an 8th grader, took the ACT and scored in the 99% for her verbal component. This is directly attributable to her having participated in Amy's rigorous Latin class and Regan's Barbarian Diagrammarian. I so appreciate your wonderful courses and the academic challenge that you offer in such a very humorous but educational format. The cost for your course, when weighed against the scholarship offers that have flooded in since her results, is more than compensated. The return on investment is astronomical."

"I am astounded that my writing and grammar hating child is BEGGING to take this class! He has loved the etymology class (Witty Wordsmith) so much that he wants to take whatever Mr. Barr is teaching. Thanks for getting my child to love words and language structure!" ~ E.O., Witty Wordsmith mom

Why take grammar at The Lukeion Project?
Check out our blog, Old fashioned Diagramming, New Fashioned Comprehension
Who’s afraid of a little grammar? We can show you how to put it in its place! Are you ready to split some infinitives or dangle some participles with aplomb? This visual approach offers students the skills needed to start Latin, begin Greek, and claim ascendency over the English language. Master grammatical jargon, put nouns right where they belong, and get your hands on all the best weapons for defeating English grammar before it ever gets the better of you.
There are a lot of English programs out there but most of them require hours of dry workbook assignments. This course will help you understand the English language from the ground up using a variety of techniques, not the least of which will be sentence diagramming.
When The Lukeion Project was founded in 2005, we had our first Latin students begin classes. Almost from the start, we realized that even brilliant students were poorly prepared to handle basic language mechanics beyond parts of speech. Through years of experience and observation of beginning language students, we designed this course for any student planning to take any foreign language in the future, not the least of which would be Latin and Greek (and indeed, English).
This is the best available language mechanics course.
Recommended for 7th/8th grade level. Students must be comfortable completing weekly assignments on time, preparing for, and completing regular quizzes and exams.
All materials are provided by the instructor because this is a one-of-a-kind experience. Instructor - Regan Barr
I am enjoying Barbarian Diagrammarian very much, it is the funniest (that's a superlative) grammar class I have taken, and it will be the funniest grammar class I will ever take. --BD Student practicing his terms and tenses.
This course is offered in the spring only. Session time options:
Classes meet once a week for an hour live and require weekly assignments based on assignments provided by the instructor. Learners should keep an organized notebook and recopy class notes after each session.
Lukeion English Students will:
1. Complete weekly assignments
2. Take online quizzes and exams including a midterm and final exam
3. Attend the live session once a week, and participate by asking great questions and offering answers when asked.
4. Plan to spend 4-5 hours total on this course each week.
Students should expect to keep up with the pace of the course. If your student is new to having several weekly requirements for a class, keep close tabs until he or she has formed good work habits. This academic maturity is a natural component to future language studies so now is a great time to model and protect good time management skills. We keep due dates and times quite firm to develop necessary time management skills.
