What really works for us in our home school:

BigBrains Timez Attack

What you must have:

  • Windows-based platform, recommended XP or Vista

    • Attention Vista users:  before joining our classroom for the first time, install this patch.

    • Sorry, Macs users have not been able to connect --we are working on this issue and hope to resolve it in the future but cannot recommend use of Macs.

    • OS earlier than XP are too old to support the Live Meeting classroom.

  • High-Speed internet connect (DSL, Cable, Satellite)

  • Computer speakers or headphones

What you do NOT need:

  • Software:  your tuition not only covers instruction, but all connection, classroom, and Microsoft support charges.

  • Phone: all audio and visuals come directly through the internet connection and the Live Meeting classroom.

  • a computer video camera or microphone

    • All students may type questions at any time during the session.

    • Recent upgrades to our classroom, however, do provide students the option of using a video camera and/or a computer microphone if they wish to interact live with instructor permission.

Recommended purchase for semester course students:

  • Computer headset with microphone

    • Our classes feature two-way audio and we will occasionally use this feature for discussion and presentation.

How Will Each Class Work Online?

We will be glad to send you a recorded class sample...just ask (sorry, due to high storage fees we usually can't provide specific topics)

All courses will be offered live and online.  You must download a small piece of software to join our courses (at no charge to you).  This software will allow you to hear the instructor, see pictures, text and white board, and be able to interact in a number of ways with the class and instructor.  Students will be asked to participate during each session and should be prepared in case they are called on.

While we don't anticipate any problems with our software during our courses, each computer's hardware, software and security configuration are different and may, as a result, cause technical difficulties.  While we will work with the family to resolve the problem, each family is, in the end, responsible for making sure that their own computer is in good working order and configured to function well during each class according to these guidelines.  Microsoft Live Meeting provides us with support and all students are entitled to full support through our contract with them.

In order to make your experience positive, we strongly recommend that you:

  • Download the Microsoft Live Meeting Client as you click into your invitation.  You may not use the web console.  You will not be able to hear.
  • Use a high-speed internet connection (dial-up won't work).  You do not have to use your home computer as long as you are certain to send us the internet address where you want your invitation sent
  • Keep your email address up to date.  It is entirely up to you to notify us where (which email address) you want your invitation sent.  If you have not received an invitation within 24 hours of the class, please email us well in advance to ensure that you can enter the classroom on time.  If the instructor has already started the class, he or she will not generally have time to attempt to admit stragglers.  We do not give refunds for workshops missed because email addresses where not kept up to date.
  • Keep your wireless devices far apart.  Be aware that if you use routers, wireless networks, and wireless phones (2.8ghz), and even microwaves, you may find you have occasional interference during a one-hour class transmission.
  • Turn your speakers on.   When you sign into a classroom, you should be able to hear a voice or music within a few minutes of doing so.  If you do not, check your speakers first.
  • Don't email or download during class.  Even high speed internet can only handle just so much.  If, for example, you have cable internet/phone, and your household is watching TV, talking on the phone, attending one of our classes and downloading email, you will have sluggish VoIP and image transmission.
  • Keep your computer bug free and up-to-date.  All computers need to be running virus protection software and spy ware protection.  Failure to do so will cause sound interruption, image interruption, or a complete inability to connect with the classroom.

Technology F.A.Qs

How Does the Instructor Interact with the Class?

You will hear the instructor's voice during class via VoIP (sound comes through your computer speakers, not a separate phone-line or long distance call.   During class the instructor will share pictures (lots of pictures), notes, charts, maps, drawings, diagrams, web pages, videos etc.  The instructor will also be able to write on the white board during lecture time and allow students to write on it as well.

How Do Students Interact with the Class?

Students will be able to offer constant feedback in a number of ways.  Questions can be asked at any time and can be kept private for only the instructor or asked so that the whole class can read them.  The instructor can open up the "floor" for all students in the class to type comments or responses during discussion time.  Students will be able to write answers on the white board in real time for all to see.  The instructor can also open up questions in a fun "polling" tool that allows everybody to answer a question simultaneously while results are graphed live.  Upgrades to our classroom environment will also permit students to address the whole class when appropriate (2-way VoIP)

Will the Students be Able to See or Hear Each Other?

Ever been in a room full of 15-year olds when they are talking about something of great interest?  We have!  In order to provide an optimum classroom experience, we normally have only one-way voice (instructor to students).  During special classes and during our live end-of-semester Open Houses, our semester students give a live presentation to their classmates in which we are all able to hear each other.   We do allow the students to chat on an adult monitored white board just prior to and after all classes, and chat using our two-way audio during these same periods.

What Will the Students See During Class Time?

There will be a number of frames visible most of the time but the primary image will be a screen where the instructor shows notes, images, charts, writes on the white board, takes opinion polls, shows online satellite images, web sites, animated maps, etc.  For language classes, students will write answers directly to the instructor which means that ALL students have a chance to respond, even if they are slower than the "first responder."
