Dear parents and students; It is an honor and a privilege to teach bright minds Latin and Greek. We take this responsibility seriously, but also try to make this process rich and rewarding for our learners. In all Lukeion language classes, our once-a-week sessions unpack and explain new material provided by the text book and we quiz and review previous material. The unique live online classroom environment offers each student the opportunity to respond during our question and answer time. Instructors invite students to ask questions any time in class or by email throughout the week. Language games, quizzes handouts, translations, useful web links and a class calendar are available to the student at all times. All quizzes are taken and submitted online as is homework. The work is personally graded by the instructor. The successful Lukeion language student will not be expected to have already completed any Latin or Greek. We do, however, invite only students who have a confident understanding of English grammar. The best indicator of student success in either ancient language is a natural inquisitiveness, self-motivation, and good study skills. Successful students are also willing to maintain good communication with the instructor. While we accommodate a large number of gifted students at ages as young as 10 or 11, we would recommend that most students delay the formal study of these languages until they are at least 13 or 14 years of age to allow for good study skills and formal reasoning to develop. The pace of both Greek and Latin with the Lukeion Project is slightly accelerated compared to many high school programs. Even very good students should not be surprised to spend 8-12 hours on their language studies per average week. Anyone involved in hobbies or activities which will regularly prevent them from committing this amount of time to the new language should not apply for this language program. We look forward to working with you and your student as you pursue the most satisfying language experience in world history: ancient Latin and ancient Greek.
