"We are not new to the Project but have thoroughly enjoyed our two year experience with you. We tell many people about your teaching. We will be with you for many years since the youngest guy here is only 10 and wanted to start Latin with you in the fall.  We will try to fit in a few history workshops in the summer and the fall.  Thanks for your great teaching and commitment to excellence!!  Debbie W., mom

Differences in online classes

Range of classes available

Types of students who benefit from our classes

Computer and connection requirements

....My daughter has taken several workshops. She was thrilled and each class fed her intellectual curiosity in a wonderful way. My daughter is not easily thrilled, so that is a huge compliment! She was engaged by the subject matter, and the Barrs' enthusiasm definitely contagious. I highly recommend their classes! If you're a parent without a lot of inclination toward history, let the Barrs teach your kids!  Elizabeth R., parent

I HIGHLY recommend Lukeion… My daughter started taking classes last year and has quickly become a devotee… the classes are fun and interactive... Give them a try... I can promise you: “You will not regret it!” Rita R., parent

Lukeion Classroom Experience

  • Courses meet live, online for a one hour once-a-week

    • classes are NOT chat rooms, discussion boards or conference calls

    • fully illustrated presentations bring Greece and Rome to your learner

    • online games help learning and review

    • convenient online quizzes graded by instructors

  • Ask questions in real time and get your answer on the spot

    • Questions are welcomed and encouraged

    • Instructors available by email at all times...no "office hour" limitations

  • Hear the presentation from computer speakers...no extra phone bills.

  • Interact with the class

    • White board discussions before and after each session
bring students together from around the world

We offer two types of classes...

  • Workshops are geared toward a broad audience age 10 through adult.
Workshops are  4 sessions, 1 hour each session, once a week
    (summer 4 consecutive days)

  • Semester courses and seminars are challenging and are for those working
at or above the high school level.
They provide excellent preparation for college.  16-week courses meet
one hour each session, once a week with course-work assignments
assigned and submitted outside of class.

ONLINE classes are not the same

The idea of online classes predates the development of high-speed internet.  Consequently, the term "online" today is applied to everything from a check list of resources,  correspondence courses via email, chat rooms, recordings and any combination of media.

All of our classes at the Lukeion Project are passionately taught, live, real-time presentations.  We use cutting-edge technology developed for collaborative international meetings.  Students see animated presentations, take virtual trips together to museum sites and news articles, share documents, collaborate, discuss and much more.

Students attend our live class by high-speed internet connection from anywhere in the world.

  • Fun: online weekly puzzles and games help students actively review anHeracles (or Roman Hercules) is the #1 ancient Greek Herod enjoy the material.

  • Unique class web pages keep handouts, activities, calendars and more available 24/7

  • Strong visual presentations

  • Online format compliments most learning styles.  (contact us for a sample recording)

  • Semester courses are college-preparatory by developing good time management skills, test taking strategies, research writing skills, note-taking and much more

All kinds of students:

  • Courses are designed around preparedness and interest, not age.

  • Gifted students are not affected by ageism in the online environment.

  • Courses are appropriate for strong visual and auditory learners

  • Adult students are welcome to join us.

Instruction

  • Live, real-time, online--NOT computer tutorials.

  • Faculty is approachable and provide feedback to help your learner grow

  • Interaction is valued and encouraged

  • .
  • We use humor in our classes:  please no "ivory tower" attitudes about the ancient world.

Interdisciplinary

  • We bring the ancient world to life with high value placed on the interdisciplinary approach

  • :

We weave together literature, history, archaeology and art to give

learners a broad understanding of the subject.

Instructors

  • We teach only courses where we have degrees, experience and passion.

  • Learn about the Greeks and Romans from real archaeologists!.

  • If it's not one of our favorite topics, we don't offer it!

The best preserved "public" library of the ancient world is Ephesus, Turkey.

A Note about Technology:

We  use both one-way and two-way voice over IP for our sessions . Your student will hear the instructor, see notes and images, and be able to provide constant feedback in class in a variety of ways (poll, mark-up, text, quizzes, whiteboard, chat, full-class chat, and more).  We will also occasionally include a video feed.

At this time, a Windows-based computer and high speed internet (DSL, Cable, etc.) are required to attend one of our classes.  In addition, your OS must be reasonably up to date:  Windows 98 will not work.  Macs have been problematic -- we can not recommend that you attempt to use a Mac at this time (sorry!).
