Lukeion Project Gift Ideas for Ancient World Minded Folks Age of Mythology: All I can say is that our kids have spent hours playing this game and still don't seem to get tired of it. Lot's of problem solving skills- building, lots to work on, and some mythology (and Greek) thrown in for fun.
Civilization IV: This is a wonderful computer game for history minded people. My gifted 9 year old plays it every minute he is allowed to have "tech time." Not a "shoot 'em up" sort of game so those accustomed to that will be bored. This game rolls history, strategy and hints about warfare from every period into one endlessly changing challenge.
Drive Thru History with Dave Stotts. Despite the fact that the tour guide, Dave Stotts, has a tendency to mispronounce things, we give two thumbs up for this video series. Includes 4 DVDs: Rome If You Want To / Greece and the Word / Turkish Delight / East Meets West. All these DVDs are a lighter look at Biblical history put out by the Focus on the Family organization. These are fun viewing for everyone but still plenty of good historical meat.
How Shall We Then Live? This newly released DVD is a beautiful gift for the deep thinker in your household. Francis Shaeffer, one of the most brilliant thinkers of our time, takes a overview of history and reflects on purpose, meaning and providence. This is a classic yet still thought provoking piece that is now available on DVD for the first time. I include this old work because it is one of the things that drew me into a career on the ancient world as a teenager. Each episode focuses on a significant era of history while presenting answers to modern problems. The series is divided into twelve thirty minute sections; The Roman Age, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance, The Reformation, The Revolutionary Age, The Scientific Age, The Age of Non-reason, The Age of Fragmentation, The Age of Personal Peace & Affluence, Final Choices, and the two-segment interview with Francis & Edith Schaeffer: Living with Suffering & Sickness, and God's Leading in L'Abri & Our Lives. Great for World View studies. 300 minutes.
