Recommendations for Learning Greek and Latin

Diagramming Sentences is one of the best way to prepare to study for ancient languages.  This is a good place to start (general introduction aimed at late elementary through adult).

Greek Aids

Greek Dictionary (recommended for those who are serious about continuing in Greek)  An Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon: Founded upon the 7th ed. of Liddell and Scott's Greek-English Lexicon. 1889.

Greek Alphabet Blocks I did chuckle when I saw these because I could just see whole families learning Greek all at the same time:  Mom, Dad, right down to the youngest on the floor.  Here's the perfect tool to master that Greek alphabet early on:

Latin Aids

A Comprehensive Guide to Wheelock's Latin is a plain language companion for those taking Latin through Wheelock (our text of choice).  If your grammar wasn't quite as good as you thought it was, and you are left puzzled by Wheelock's grammatical definitions, this book reduces everything to simple, understandable terms to help save the day.  There are also short exercises for each chapter to help you understand the mechanics of the Latin you learn.

Thirty-Eight Latin Stories provides a short (and sometimes not so short) story for each chapter in Wheelock's Latin.  The stories are packed with the vocabulary and grammar presented in that chapter.  This kind of practical (and fun) review is why most college Latin courses require this companion to Wheelock.

Cumulative Chapter Vocabulary Lists for Wheelock's Latin seems frivolous until you start to get into your second through fourth semester of Latin.  Then the distinctions between conjugations and declensions begins to blur.  This book will help you sort this problem out.  So, if you are prone to "vocabulary" problems, this might be a good cure.

Workbook for Wheelock's Latin is a text I do not require for my Latin course because there are plenty of text book exercises for the average student to master Latin.  However, we all know that "average" is a myth!  So, if you need more time practicing the mechanics of Latin, each of these chapters (corresponds to book) gives you plenty of opportunity.  Those who purchase this book must follow the directions in the text book for getting the answer key  to make these exercises self-graded.

Vocabulary Cards and Grammatical Forms for Wheelock's Latin is a good idea for students who are starting Latin with us in second year Latin  These might also be a good idea for those who print less neatly than might be conducive to good flash card creation.  Reviews of this product is that the "cards" must be punched out---and prove to be a bit flimsy--but the content is all there, given a light hand and some paitence.
